The glamorous beginnings of high tea originated with the Duchess of Bedford by the name of Anna, and her need for a pot of tea and some bread-like items between noon and the customary late evening meals. She soon adopted a European style of meeting by inviting friends to join her. The menu soon expanded and included small cakes, bread and butter sandwiches and sweets to accompany the tea. The idea grew to become a fashionable way to entertain by the mid 1860’s.
The ladies afternoon gatherings have been seen as an initiation of young girls into young women as the practice requires manners and social etiquette. In their private rooms, ladies could discuss any topic openly as could not be done when among men.
In the 18th Century, China was the major exporter of tea and due to the heavy import duties, was largely consumed only by higher classes. At this time, the lady of the house was the sole owner of a key to a locked caddy that housed the precious and expensive tea. Tea urns and accessories were also commonly displayed in their own expensive display cabinets.
Today, Tea is arguably one of the most commonly consumed beverages around the world and comes in many varieties.
